Honeypot
A token whose smart contract lets buys go through but silently blocks or fails on sell - trapping liquidity in and draining it later.
Why it matters
Honeypots pump 500%+ in minutes because the exit valve is closed - every buy sticks, nobody can sell, chart looks like the launch of the decade. Then the deployer opens the switch, dumps his supply, and every holder wakes up to zero.
How honeypots work
- Buy allowed - the swap function works for any wallet.
- Sell blocked - the contract has a hidden blacklist, 99% sell tax, or whitelist-only transfer.
- Team can sell - deployer's wallet is always whitelisted.
- Fake chart - price rockets because there are no sells to counter buys.
- Exit dump - team switches contract mode or triggers the whitelist to sell everything at once.
A trader sees a token pump 8x in 20 minutes on DEX Screener. Green candles, zero sells, hype in the pair chat. They buy.
Their sell fails with a strange error. They try again with higher slippage - still fails. Meanwhile the deployer wallet dumps 100M tokens into the pool. Chart drops to zero in one block. Every buyer is stuck.
How to spot one before buying
- Use a checker - RugCheck (Solana), Honeypot.is (ETH/BNB) run automated sell simulations.
- Watch the sells column - if you see 300 buys and zero sells, close the tab.
- Read the audit tab - DEX Screener flags known honeypot signatures.
- Check contract functions - blacklist, setTax, updateTransfer are red flags.
- Look at top holders - one wallet with 80% of supply is a countdown timer.
Common mistakes
- FOMO on green candles - the best-looking chart in the room is often the trap.
- Trusting Telegram admins - the entire chat can be paid actors.
- Skipping the sell test - a $10 test sell exposes 90% of honeypots.
- Ignoring low sell count - the pair with 500 buys and 3 sells is telling you something.
