Total Supply
Total supply is the amount of a cryptocurrency that currently exists after accounting for permanently burned tokens. It can include tokens held by a team, treasury or vesting contract, so it is not the same as circulating supply.
What Total Supply Measures
Total supply describes existing issuance, not the maximum a project might eventually create. Tokens do not disappear from total supply merely because they are locked or held outside the public market. Those restrictions matter when estimating circulating supply, which answers a different question.
A project can therefore have a large existing supply while a smaller amount is available for public trading. The gap does not, by itself, explain who owns the remainder or when it may become available.
How Burns Affect the Figure
Conceptually, total supply equals minted tokens minus permanently burned tokens. But check what your data source already counts. A contract's supply value may decrease when a burn function executes; subtracting the same burn again would understate supply.
Some analytics methods also account for tokens sent to verifiably inaccessible addresses. An inactive wallet is not automatically a burn address. The token burn entry explains that distinction.
Total, Maximum and Circulating
Max supply is an issuance ceiling where one exists. Total supply is the amount existing now. Circulating supply estimates the portion available in the public market under the source's methodology.
Do not calculate total supply by subtracting burns from max supply unless you have independently established that the entire maximum was already issued. Future unminted tokens are not part of the current total.
How to Check a Supply Claim
Confirm the network and token address, then compare the explorer or contract data with the project's supply explanation. Check whether decimals, burns and the observation time are handled consistently.
For a listing application, preserve the source behind the submitted figure. Supply can change through token minting or burning. A correctly reported total does not prove fair distribution, liquidity, safe permissions or future price performance.
