Max Supply
Max supply is the maximum number of units a cryptocurrency is designed to issue under its supply rules. It is a ceiling, not the amount already minted or currently trading. Some cryptocurrencies have no predetermined maximum.
What the Ceiling Describes
A finite max supply describes the upper issuance limit specified by the protocol or token design. It does not tell you how much supply exists today, how quickly new units are issued or who receives them.
Read the supply rule alongside the issuance schedule. A token can have substantial future issuance remaining below its ceiling, so a finite maximum does not remove the possibility of dilution as more tokens enter circulation.
Max Is Not Current Supply
Total supply describes existing tokens after accounting for burns. Circulating supply estimates the portion available in the public market. Max supply can be larger than either because it includes potential future issuance.
A market-data page may use a maximum-supply assumption in its fully diluted valuation. Check the provider's definition and supply input instead of assuming every displayed valuation uses the same denominator.
Unlimited and Unknown Differ
An unlimited or uncapped supply means the design has no predetermined finite ceiling. An unknown value means the data source has not established or reported a maximum. Neither should automatically be entered as zero.
When preparing token information for a tracker, describe the actual issuance rule and cite supporting project or protocol documentation. Do not invent a finite maximum simply because a form or comparison table expects a number.
What a Cap Does Not Prove
A supply cap does not establish demand, fair allocation, available liquidity or the timing of future releases. Those require separate checks. A small cap is not inherently more valuable than a large one.
Review existing issuance, token vesting and the evidence supporting the stated ceiling. For contract-based tokens, inspect relevant issuance permissions rather than treating a marketing claim about scarcity as proof that additional minting is impossible.
