Liquidity Depth
Liquidity depth is the amount of liquidity available near the current market price. It shows how much a market can absorb before a trade moves the price significantly.
Why it matters
Two pools can display similar liquidity and still give very different results for the same trade. One may absorb the order with little price movement, while the other produces high price impact because usable liquidity is thin near the current price.
That is why depth is more practical than a headline liquidity number. It asks a better question: how much can actually be bought or sold at prices close to the quote?
How depth works
In a standard automated market maker, reserves and the pool formula determine how the price changes as a swap consumes one side of the pool. In concentrated-liquidity systems, providers choose price ranges, so a pool can show substantial capital while only part of it is active near the current price.
Order-book depth works differently. Traders place bids and asks at specific price levels. A larger market order moves through those levels until it is filled, which can widen the gap between the first quoted price and the average execution price.
Imagine two TOKEN/USDC pools. Pool A has $500,000 in well-distributed liquidity. Pool B also shows $500,000, but most of it sits outside the current trading range. A $10,000 swap may execute smoothly in Pool A and move the price much more in Pool B.
The useful question is not only “How much liquidity is shown?” but “How much liquidity is usable for this trade size, direction, and price range?”
Assessing depth
- Compare estimated price impact at several realistic order sizes.
- Check both buy-side and sell-side execution.
- Confirm the exact trading pair and pool address.
- See whether liquidity is concentrated in a narrow range.
- Compare the main pool with smaller or inactive pools for the same token.
- Read liquidity beside recent volume and trade count.
Depth changes when users trade, providers add or remove capital, or the market price leaves a concentrated range. It is a live market condition, not a permanent quality score.
